OTOPLAN Software
Just like your fingerprint, your cochlea is completely unique in size, shape, and structure—and we design our technology to respect that.

Individual cochleas and cochlear duct lengths can differ significantly in size and shape from person to person, and even between one’s own cochleas.1 MED-EL offers the largest selection of electrode arrays so each implant recipient can be sure they’ll receive the best possible array for their unique cochlear anatomy.
Only with MED-EL, surgeons have exclusive access to an innovative software called OTOPLAN.* This software allows surgeons to access a 3D model of your cochlea to help choose the FLEX electrode array that will best fit the size and shape of
your cochlea.

How Does It Work?
During your pre-op procedure, you may be required to get an MRI to ensure that your cochlea's structure can support a cochlear implant. Using your MRI scans, several measurements are made with OTOPLAN to determine the size of your cochlea. Cochlea lengths can vary from 26 to 42mm regardless of age, gender, or side (left vs right). These measurements may then be used for preoperative assessment of the appropriate electrode array variant based on the measurement of your cochlea.
With MED-EL’s OTOPLAN On Demand service, your surgical team has easy access to detailed reports to support electrode selection for your specific cochlea.

Why Does Implant Fit Matter?
The more access a cochlear implant electrode array has to your cochlea, the wider range of sound frequencies you could hear.
Think of your cochlea rolled-out across a piano keyboard. To play all the notes from low to high, you need to reach every piano key. A custom-fitted implant offers:
- Coverage for the full length of your cochlea
- Access to the full range of sound
- Programming options for sound that’s closest to natural hearing
