Cochlear Implant: Costs and Insurance
How much does a cochlear implant cost? Are cochlear implants covered by insurance? What if I need a second cochlear implant? Are rehabilitation costs covered? And what do I need to do to get a cochlear implant? Here you’ll find answers about costs, insurance coverage, and more.
Essential Info:
- Cost: In Canada, you generally don’t have to pay for your cochlear implant yourself. The initial cost for cochlear implant surgery and associated external equipment are covered by the health care programs of each province and territory for qualifying Canadian residents.
- Untreated hearing loss is expensive: Not treating severe hearing loss costs much more than providing someone with a cochlear implant.
- Other costs: Cochlear implant fittings, repairs, and service in Canada are generally covered, but coverage depends on the province and specific program.
- Financial aid: There are special services, financial aid, and grants that people with hearing loss can take advantage of.
- Who gets a CI: Cochlear implants can be a solution for people with hearing loss for whom a hearing aid is no longer enough.
How Much Does a Cochlear Implant Cost?
A cochlear implant is the only medical device that can restore a physical sense and is typically used for many years.
As stated by WHO in the World Report on Hearing, globally, unaddressed hearing loss poses an annual cost of over $ 980 billion. This includes costs related to health care, education, productivity losses, and societal costs. Many of these costs can be mitigated through the use of cost–effective interventions, such as cochlear implants.
