Frequently asked Questions about SYNCHRONY Cochlear Implant

What is the SYNCHRONY Cochlear Implant?

The SYNCHRONY CI is the cochlear implant of the SYNCHRONY CI System. It is built on the proven design of the CONCERTO Cochlear Implant and features a new magnet that is MRI Safe at 3.0 Tesla with or without magnet removal.

Why would I want a 3.0 Tesla MRI?

A 3.0 Tesla MRI image is high-resolution and gives surgeons a clearer view of the scanned area, which can aid in diagnosis and treatment.

What is so special about the magnet in the SYNCHRONY CI?

The magnet is diametrically magnetized and can freely rotate, allowing it to self-align to any magnetic field. This eliminates the risk of demagnetization during MRI scans and greatly reduces implant torque to make MRIs more comfortable for the patient.

Can the magnet be removed?

Yes, the magnet can be removed if necessary. Removal of the magnet may be preferred, for example, when a clear MRI image of the area near the implant is necessary.
The conical design of the removable magnet greatly reduces the risk of dislocation or migration, and the implant features a polymer stiffening ring within the silicone implant body to further secure the magnet housing. The magnet can only be removed from the bottom side of the implant, so dislocation of the magnet due to trauma is almost impossible.

How small is the SYNCHRONY CI?

The SYNCHRONY CI is 45.7 mm tall, 25.4 mm wide, and 4.5 mm thick.

How reliable is the SYNCHRONY CI?

The SYNCHRONY CI implant housing is made out of robust titanium and is impact resistant to ≥2.5 Joule.

Which electrode arrays are available with the SYNCHRONY CI?

The SYNCHRONY CI is compatible with all current MED-EL electrodes including the FLEX Series, the FORM Series, the CLASSIC Series, and ABI.

Which audio processors are compatible with the SYNCHRONY CI?

All current MED-EL audio processors are compatible with the SYNCHRONY CI. Using the SYNCHRONY CI requires the appropriate diametrically magnetized coil magnet.

What is the SYNCHRONY PIN?

The SYNCHRONY PIN is a version of the SYNCHRONY CI that includes robust titanium pins integrated into the implant housing. These pins provide additional stability against translational and rotational motion of the implant, for outstanding implant reliability.

Frequently asked Questions about SONNET Audio Processor

What is the SONNET Audio Processor?

The SONNET Audio Processor is the newest audio processor from MED-EL. It is a behind-the-ear design that is water resistant and features MED-EL's newest technological innovations, including the new Automatic Sound Management 2.0 and Datalogging.

How water-resistant is SONNET?

SONNET is protected against moisture such as sweat, humidity, and rain.

What does Automatic Sound Management 2.0 do?

ASM2.0 improves upon MED-EL's proven Automatic Sound Management. It includes Automatic Volume Control with dual-loop AGC and introduces Microphone Directionality and Wind Noise Reduction.
Automatic Volume Control automatically adjusts volume levels, for sounds that are clear and comfortable. Microphone Directionality means the processor can focus on the sounds that are in front of the listener and reduces background noise, for speech that is easier to understand. Wind Noise Reduction minimizes continuous wind noise, for improved listening in outdoor environments.

What is Datalogging?

Datalogging saves information about processor usage so the recipient doesn't have to remember anything. It gives the audiologist information like which maps are used and how often they are used, to allow the audiologist to better fit the processor to each recipient's hearing and preferences.

How small is SONNET?

SONNET is 56.7 mm tall, 37.4 mm deep, and up to 9.3 mm wide. With the Micro Battery Pack Cover, SONNET is just 51.4 mm tall and the lightest audio processor available.

How many microphones does SONNET have?

SONNET has two omnidirectional microphones, located on the top of the audio processor. It is these two microphones that are necessary for Microphone Directionality and Wind Noise Reduction. The microphones are protected by replaceable microphone covers.

Can SONNET connect to external devices?

SONNET has flexible connectivity options and can be used with many different devices. With the RogerTM 21 from Phonak*, SONNET can connect to a range of Roger wireless microphones to bring you great sound from across a busy room, as well as from your phone, TV and other devices. SONNET's integrated telecoil allows easy connectivity to wireless neckloops, and to hearing loop systems in public venues. With the FM Battery Pack Cover, you can also use direct audio input cables to plug SONNET straight into your favorite audio devices.

* Roger™ is a trademark of Phonak

What safety features does SONNET have?

The SONNET has a switch-free and tamper-proof housing, with a lockable earhook and lockable battery pack. This prevents children from accidentally switching settings and is easy to use for older adults who might have limited mobility in their fingers.

What cochlear implants is SONNET compatible with?

SONNET is compatible with the last 20 years of MED-EL cochlear implants: the C40, C40+, PULSAR, SONATA, CONCERTO, MED-EL CONCERT, and SYNCHRONY cochlear implants.

What batteries should be used with SONNET?

SONNET can be powered by 3 different types of batteries. With two size 675 zinc air batteries, SONNET offers up to 60 hours of battery life. There are also Standard rechargeable batteries available (up to 10 hours of battery life) and smaller Micro rechargeable batteries (up to 7 hours of battery life).

What wearing options are available for SONNET?

SONNET has versatile wearing options. For infants under 2 years, BabyWear allows SONNET to be attached to their clothes, leaving nothing behind their ears. ActiveWear for SONNET enables young children and active adults to wear just the lightweight control unit on their ears, with the battery pack secured to their clothing. Both BabyWear and ActiveWear are designed to give users extra security and added comfort when wearing SONNET.The Mini Battery Pack lets you power SONNET with a single AAA battery, while wearing the battery pack on the body.

How many colors does SONNET come in?

The SONNET is available in hundreds of color combinations. The audio processor comes in 6 different base colors: anthracite, beige, black, ebony, nordic grey, and white. The interchangeable glossy microphone covers and battery pack covers are available in 15 colors: anthracite, beige, black, ebony, nordic grey, white, bordeaux red, creme, baby pink, baby blue, green, orange, pacific blue, and sienna brown. Additionally, removable skins are available for SONNET so you can create your own custom look.

What coil cable options are available?

The coil cable is available in three lengths: 8.5 cm, 11 cm, and 28 cm. It is also available in four colors: black, beige, nordic grey, and white.

What coil magnet strengths are available?

There are four magnet strengths available: Soft, Standard, Strong, and Super Strong. Due to the SYNCHRONY CI's unique magnet design, a specific coil magnet has been designed for use with the SYNCHRONY CI.

Frequently asked Questions about SONNET EAS Audio Processor

SONNET is available in a version with an integrated acoustic component which allows it to provide Electric Acoustic Stimulation (EAS). As such, it is referred to as SONNET EAS.

What is new in the SONNET EAS?

The SONNET EAS is the first MED-EL EAS processor that can be used with the same components as the current MED-EL CI audio processor. This includes all battery options and color choices, technologies like ASM2.0, Datalogging, telecoil, and FM connection, and up to 60 hours of battery life.

How is a SONNET changed to a SONNET EAS?

For a SONNET that contains the acoustic component, adding the acoustic earhook and ear mold will change a SONNET to a SONNET EAS. Removing the acoustic earhook and ear mold will change a SONNET EAS to a SONNET. For a SONNET that does not contain the acoustic component, it is not possible to change it to a SONNET EAS.
