Hearing Implant Systems for Single-Sided Deafness
MED-EL offers a range of solutions for SSD that can restore hearing and quality of life.

What is Single-Sided Deafness (SSD)?

Single-Sided Deafness (SSD) is a hearing loss that occurs in only one ear, while the other ear has normal hearing or only mild hearing loss. SSD makes it hard to understand speech and sounds especially in noisy environments, as well as causing difficulties in determining the direction of a sound's location. Listening with only one ear also requires increased effort, which can be tiring and detrimental to learning.

MED-EL offers two of the most advanced hearing solutions for SSD, a Cochlear Implant System and a Bone Conduction Implant System. Read more about these solutions below.

Cochlear
Implant System

A MED-EL cochlear implant system can restore hearing to the deafened ear by directly stimulating the nerves of the inner ear. MED-EL offers the only CI system that is CE-Marked for SSD in both children and adults. Learn more about cochlear implants.

Bone Conduction
Implant System

The BONEBRIDGE active bone conduction implant system uses natural bone conduction to actively transmit sound signals from the deafened side of the head to the functional ear. Learn more about the Bonebridge.

Restoring Binaural Hearing

Single-Sided Deafness

SSD (Monaural Hearing)

With hearing loss in one ear, it becomes difficult to understand the direction that sounds are coming from. Sound can only be understood by the hearing ear, meaning that all sounds seem to come from only that side of the head. This can make sound localisation and speech in noise especially difficult.

Binaural Hearing

Binaural Hearing

Binaural hearing, or hearing with two ears, enables an individual to experience the three-dimensional world of sound. With binaural hearing the brain can understand speech in quiet and noisy environments, recognise the direction of sounds, and enjoy the full potential of sound. A cochlear implant system from MED-EL can restore binaural hearing.

Why choose MED-EL for SSD?

Detlef Fischer

Detlef, CI, Germany

"I found myself continuously turning around asking, 'What was that? Where did that noise come from? Did I hit something? Was it in front of me? Behind me? Or did it come from three rows down? With the new MED-EL audio processor I noticed that my speech understanding improved significantly. The voices sound very natural, and the high frequency sounds seem to harmonise just like normal hearing. The CI was a real piece of luck. I am more than happy with the result."

Binaural Hearing

Dirk, BONEBRIDGE, Belgium

“I have had my Bonebridge system for a year now and I can say that it really was the right choice. The expectations I had have been largely exceeded. The quality and richness of the sound is much better than I could have imagined. I can follow conversations again during meetings and join in when out with friends in a restaurant. The audio processor is really easy to use on a daily basis and not only my hearing, but the quality of my life has improved since receiving my Bonebridge.”
