Candidacy for Middle Ear Implants

Middle ear implants use mechanical energy to stimulate the structures of the inner ear. They are a proven alternative to hearing aids. Implanted since 1996, the Vibrant Soundbridge Middle Ear Implant System from MED−EL is the most successful middle ear implant on the market today. The system now features the new Amadé audio processor.*

Who Can Benefit from a Middle Ear Implant?

A middle ear implant system is an alternative to conventional hearing devices. It is designed for individuals who cannot use hearing aids for medical reasons or who are dissatisfied with other hearing devices.

Some middle ear implant systems are only available for use by the adult population. The Vibrant Soundbridge, however, has been approved for use by individuals three years and older who have been diagnosed with mild to severe sensorineural hearing loss or conductive and mixed hearing losses.** It is the only middle ear implant system available for children in this age group as its placement is independent of skull growth.

Middle ear implants are
designed for people who:

  • are diagnosed with mild to severe sensorineural hearing loss or conductive and mixed hearing losses.
  • cannot tolerate foreign bodies in the ear canal for medical reasons, e.g., chronic ear canal inflammations or ear canal eczemas.
  • require a free ear canal for personal or professional reasons, e.g., musicians, singers or physicians who wish to hear harmonics free and undistorted by the occlusion effect.
  • rely on good perception of high frequency sounds.
