As a driving force behind new innovation combined with decades of experience in hearing implant technology, MED-EL can proudly present the world’s first active bone conduction implant – the BONEBRIDGE.
With the BONEBRIDGE, MED-EL complements its family of hearing implant solutions. The BONEBRIDGE is approved for children aged 5 years and above (CE Marked).

Being the first active bone conduction implant, the BONEBRIDGE is a leap forward in bone conduction hearing system technology - a new and innovative type of hearing implant. It is the first active, intact skin hearing implant in bone conduction stimulation.

The BONEBRIDGE is a semi-implantable system consisting of an implantable part, the BCI (including the Bone Conduction - Floating Mass Transducer, the BC-FMT), and the externally worn SAMBA audio processor. The BC-FMT vibrates the bone, the bone carries the vibration to the inner ear, where it is processed like normal sound.

With the successful development of this state-of-the-art system, patients can now benefit from:

  • Transcutaneous technology already proven in MED-EL cochlear implants and middle ear implants which is now available for bone conduction stimulation
  • Intact skin device: the implant including the transducer is safely embedded under the skin. Therefore the risk of skin infection is very low and no continuous skin care is needed
  • For decades semi-implantable, transcutaneous hearing implants have proven successful and stable and have shown to go together with low complication rates
  • Direct drive bone conduction together with state-of-the-art signal processing provides excellent audiological outcomes
  • The BONEBRIDGE is a cosmetically appealing solution. The implant is completely invisible under the skin. The audio processor can be discretely worn under the hair
  • The BONEBRIDGE is the first active hearing implant where no surgical access to the middle ear is necessary

Implant of the BONEBRIDGE

The BONEBRIDGE is a pioneering implant system. Due to the combination of the proven concept of bone conduction with state-of-the-art implant technology, the BONEBRIDGE re-opens the world of hearing to many people. The bone conduction implant is positioned completely beneath the skin and receives the signals from the external audio processor. This is unique among bone conduction hearing systems.

The BCI is the implantable part of the BONEBRIDGE and consists of a magnet surrounded by the receiver coil, the electronics (demodulator), a bendable transition and the innovative, highly efficient Bone Conduction - Floating Mass Transducer (BC-FMT). Information from the audio processor is sent transcutaneously to the BCI.

With the BONEBRIDGE, sound is conducted directly to the bone, which then transmits it to the inner ear. This allows people suffering from conductive hearing loss, mixed hearing loss or single-sided deafness to hear again. The internal part of the BONEBRIDGE (BCI) is implanted in the course of a brief surgical intervention.

The SAMBA offers a new wave of hearing technology for BONEBRIDGE recipients, with its data-logging feature and self-learning system, it brings with it a smarter and more efficient fitting procedure.

  • Intelligent Hearing System includes intelligent sound adapter, adaptive directional microphones and speech tracking
  • Wireless connectivity* options via Bluetooth or telecoil to external devices such as mobile phones, FM-systems, ALDs etc.
  • Up to 5 individual programs
  • Remote control for easy adjustment of volume and change of program
  • Optimized fitting procedure using battery pill or wireless fitting, vibrogram availability, and data-logging feature showing usage of the SAMBA
