BCI 601 - Bone Conduction Implant
The BCI 601 is the implanted part of the BONEBRIDGE system consisting of:
- an internal coil
- a magnet to hold the Amadé BB audio processor in place over the implant
- a demodulator to convert the signal from the Amadé BB audio processor
- a Bone Conduction Floating Mass Transducer (BC-FMT) to cause vibrations of the skull
The implant only measures 69.0 mm long, 28.6 mm wide, has a height of 8.7 mm, and weighs 25 grams. The BC-FMT is made of titanium, which is an advanced material often used for long-term medical implants. Titanium is very wear-resistant and there are no immunological rejection reactions against the metal. The other components of the implant are sealed with medical-grade silicone elastomer.
The Bonebridge surgery takes about one hour. During that time, the BCI 601 is implanted under the skin behind the ear. The surgery is performed under general or local anesthesia. After two to four weeks, when the sutures have healed, the implant can be activated by putting on the Amadé BB audio processor. Since the implant lies completely under the skin, it is not visible from the outside and complication rates are very low.
