Cochlear Implant System
The MAESTRO Cochlear Implant System is a medical device for individuals with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. For individuals with this type of hearing loss, hearing aids provide little or no benefit. The MAESTRO Cochlear Implant System can be used effectively by both prelingually and postlingually deafened children and adults.
MAESTRO directly stimulates the nerve fibers of the cochlea with electrical signals. These signals are transmitted via the hearing nerve to the brain where they are interpreted as sound. MAESTRO consists of both an internal and an external component.
INTERNAL
Implant
The implant, either the MED-EL CONCERT or SONATA is surgically placed under the skin just behind the ear. It consists of a durable housing, which contains electronics, as well as a receiving antenna and a magnet. An electrode array is gently inserted into the cochlea.
