Dear All
At the age of 25 I lost the hearing in my left ear and in my mid-thirties the hearing in my right ear deteriorated. I wore hearing aids, but in time my hearing got worse and the hearing aid was no logner of benefit. I developed several tumors along my auditory nerve and was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2). My first AN surgery (left) was performed in July 2000. In February 2001 I received a cochlear implant in my left ear. It was a great personal success: after only a short time I performed well with the TEMPO+, and I was satisfied. My music enjoyment was nothing to write home about, but that did not bother me. My speech understanding was fabulous, and the limitations of my CI were only apparent when there was loud background noise. In August 2001 I was implanted with the PULSAR implant, which again delivered great speech understanding. In spring/summer 2006 I participated in MED-EL’s OPUS 1 study and instantly noticed the difference when listening to music. Now, music sounds more melodic. I can hear and differentiate between the individual instruments. Listening to music is enjoyable again! Speech understanding has also become better, and ambient noise has become easier to identify. The OPUS 1 has definitely improved my hearing quality; I hear more now! Many more user stories are available on the Hearing Companion database. Please be sure to check it out! |
