Advanced Electrode Design

MED-EL offers the broadest spectrum of different electrode arrays in the industry. They are each designed to match specific clinical requirements. The wide variety of electrode arrays enables surgeons to select the optimal solution for each individual’s ear including options for individuals presenting with cochlear ossifications or with residual hearing.

The ability of MED-EL to manufacture especially soft and flexible electrode arrays permits to design variants that allow a deep insertion into the cochlea while protecting the delicate inner ear structures. Electrode arraysspecifically designed for deep insertion (Complete Cochlear Coverage) allow the stimulation of a maximum number of nerve fibers for a most natural hearing experience with the widest frequency (pitch) range possible (refer to the section on Complete Cochlear Coverage).

The COMBI 40+ is available with the following electrode array options, depending on market availability:

Standard Electrode ArrayStandard Electrode Array
The Standard Electrode Array offers the deepest insertion (approximately 31mm) and widest contact spacing (2.4mm) available today. It features 12 pairs of electrode contacts and is designed to provide stimulation of the complete frequency range.

Medium Electrode ArrayMedium Electrode Array
The Medium Electrode Array features 12 electrode pairs with moderate contact spacing for cases where deep insertion is not desired or is not possible due to anatomic restrictions.

Compressed Electrode Array Compressed Electrode Array
Specifically designed for partial ossification or malformation of the cochlea, the Compressed Electrode Array features 12 pairs of contacts equally spaced over a shorter distance to maximize the number of channels available and optimize performance.

Split Electrode ArraySplit Electrode Array
Specifically designed for severe ossification of the cochlea, the Split Electrode features two separate electrode branches, one with five pairs and one with seven pairs of contacts. The arrays are designed for insertion into different areas of the cochlea to maximize the number of channels available and optimize performance.

FLEXsoft Electrode ArrayFLEXsoft Electrode Array
Similar to the Standard Electrode Array, the FLEXsoft Electrode Array allows deep insertion into the apical region of the cochlea. The specially designed leading section offers increased mechanical flexibility for reduced insertion force.

FLEXeas Electrode ArrayFLEXeas Electrode Array
The FLEXeas Electrode Array is intended for situations in which insertion no deeper than the basal cochlear turn is desired. The array features a designed leading section with increased mechanical flexibility and reduced insertion force.

Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI)Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI)
The Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI) is intended for patients with nonfunctional auditory nerves, typically due to Neurofibromatosis Type II (NF2). The electrode array features 12 contacts arranged on a soft, pre-shaped silicone paddle. For optimal surgical placement of the array, MED-EL offers a sophisticated ABI electrode positioning system.
